Consul General Fei Mingxing: Communist Party of China's 99th Anniversary
On 1 July 2020, The Mercury carried an article by Consul General Fei Mingxing entitled Communist Party of China's 99th Anniversary. The full text is as follows:

By now, the COVID-19 outbreak has been largely brought under control in China. The principal reason is the strong leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), which local friends have asked me to write about.

I. A Party of the People

The CPC is vanguard of the Chinese working class, the Chinese people, and the Chinese nation.

It believes the people are the creators of history and the fundamental force that determines the future of the Party and the country. The CPC does its utmost to meet the basic living needs of the people, especially the basic security for the elderly, low-insured households, and those with difficulties. It implements the responsibility system of the "rice bag" governor and the "vegetable basket" mayor.

To combat COVID-19, the CPC mobilized the best doctors, the most advanced equipment and the most needed resources in the country. All efforts have been put into the treatment of the patients, among which more than 2500 are aged over 80 in Wuhan.

For the first time, China has set no target for economic growth for 2020 due to great uncertainties, but made practical plans to ensure more than 9 million new urban jobs, give full play to over 100 million market entities and improve people's livelihoods.

II. A Party of Vision and Mission

The CPC sticks to its three historic tasks: advancing modernization, achieving reunification, safeguarding world peace and promoting common development. It strives to achieve two centenary goals and realize the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation.

The CPC exercises leadership over all areas of endeavor in every part of the country. It works hardest to uphold the authority of centralized, unified leadership of the Central Committee, and closely follows the Central Committee in thinking, political orientation and actions.

Its leadership has repeatedly warned that the biggest threat to the Party is corruption. Since the 18th CPC National Congress in 2012, more than 240 senior officials and 1 million lower-level officials have been investigated.

In 2013, President Xi Jinping proposed the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). By June 2020, 138 countries including South Africa and 30 international orgnisations have signed cooperation documents with China. In 2019, trade in goods between China and BRI partners topped US$1.3 trillion, up by 6 percent year on year.

Faced with the backlash against economic globalisation, rising geopolitical instability and non-traditional security challenges, Xi proposed and expounded on the great vision and major initiative of building a community with a shared future for mankind. It resonated with wide majority of world leaders and has been incorporated into the United Nations resolutions.

III. A Party with Great Success

Few believed the CPC could survive when it was founded in 1921. Against doubts, misunderstanding and even hostility, it has grown from a small group of around 50 members to a 90 million-member party, with millions applying to join every year.

In celebration of its 99th anniversary today, many of the CPC's outstanding achievements are worth noting: it founded a new China throughout hardships and huge sacrifice. It lifted more than 700 million people out of poverty within four decades. It grew the country into the second largest global economy with a gross domestic product of nearly 100 trillion yuan (R244 trillion). It transformed an isolated nation to an open one with diplomatic relations with 180 countries.

Adhering to "the socialism with Chinese characteristics", it is steering the country out of the harm of the current global economic downturn.

While guarding against the pandemic, the CPC is now pulling all efforts into eliminating absolute rural poverty by the end of 2020, leaving no one to worry about food and clothing, and their compulsory education, basic medical care and housing all guaranteed.

According to the "percentage trust in government 2018" of Edeman Trust Barometer, the Chinese people's trust in their government is 84%, the highest in the world. And it increased to 90% in 2020.

IV. A Party for International Solidarity

The CPC is active in its relations with foreign parties, observing the four principles of independence, equality, mutual respect and non-interference in others' internal affairs.
