Xi Jinping Holds Talks with President of Nauru David Adeang

On the afternoon of March 25, 2024, President Xi Jinping held talks at the Great Hall of the People with President of Nauru David Adeang who is on a state visit to China.

Xi Jinping pointed out that Nauru's political decision to adhere to the one-China principle and restore diplomatic relations with China in January this year is a move that conforms to the trend of history and the times. There is no first or second in friendship; once it begins, it will bring about a bright future. There is no big or small in cooperation; as long as it is sincere, it will deliver fruitful outcomes. China-Nauru relations have opened a new chapter in history. China is ready to work with Nauru to create a better future for China-Nauru relations to the greater benefit of the two peoples.

Xi Jinping stressed that treating others as equals is a defining feature of China's diplomacy. China believes that all countries, big or small, strong or weak, rich or poor, are equal members of the international community. China has always been a member of the developing world, and China's vote at the United Nations Security Council always belongs to developing countries. China-Nauru relations are based on mutual respect, equality, mutual benefit and mutual support. China firmly supports Nauru in safeguarding national sovereignty, security and development interests, and in independently pursuing a development path suited to its national conditions. China stands ready to strengthen exchanges and dialogue with Nauru at all levels and in various fields, continuously enhance mutual understanding and trust, and consolidate the political foundation of bilateral relations.

Xi Jinping pointed out that China welcomes Nauru as another country to sign the Belt and Road cooperation document with China, and China is ready to expand practical cooperation with Nauru in trade, investment, infrastructure construction and other fields, and provide Nauru with assistance for its independent and sustainable development with no political strings attached. Xi noted that the two sides need to strengthen exchanges in education, culture, health, youth, and other fields. China welcomes more young Nauruan people to study in China, and is ready to provide Nauru with assistance in addressing climate change within the framework of South-South cooperation. China is also ready to strengthen communication and coordination with Nauru in multilateral fields such as the United Nations and the Pacific Islands Forum, jointly advocate an equal and orderly multipolar world and a universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization, and safeguard the common interests of developing countries.

Adeang said that it is a great honor to be invited to China for a state visit, and to experience China's long history, splendid culture and vibrant development. Not long ago, Nauru decided to stand on the right side of history and resume diplomatic relations with China on the basis of recognizing and adhering to the one-China principle, which is an important milestone in Nauru-China relations and opens a new chapter in Nauru's national development and Nauru-China relations. Nauru highly appreciates China's continued commitment to treating all countries as equals, regardless of their size, and is ready to abide by the one-China principle, and continuously deepen cooperation with China. The Nauruan side is willing to take the resumption of diplomatic relations with China as an important opportunity to enhance mutual respect and understanding, strengthen personnel exchanges and cooperation in various fields, learn from China's experience, and develop a fruitful and mutually beneficial partnership. As the world today faces many global challenges, common progress and prosperity of mankind can only be achieved through solidarity and cooperation. The series of global initiatives put forward by President Xi Jinping are of great significance. Nauru is ready to actively participate in the Belt and Road cooperation, implement the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative and the Global Civilization Initiative, and strengthen cooperation with China on tackling climate change.

After the talks, the two heads of state jointly witnessed the signing of multiple bilateral cooperation documents in such fields as the Belt and Road cooperation, implementation of the Global Development Initiative, economic development, and agriculture.

The two sides will issue a Joint Statement between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Nauru.

Prior to the talks, Xi Jinping held a welcoming ceremony for Adeang at the North Hall of the Great Hall of the People.

A 21-gun salute was fired at Tian'anmen Square, and the guard of honor lined up in salutation. After the two heads of state stepped onto the stand, the military band played the national anthems of China and Nauru. Accompanied by Xi Jinping, Adeang reviewed the guard of honor of the People's Liberation Army and watched the march-past.

In the evening, Xi Jinping held a welcoming banquet for Adeang at the Golden Hall of the Great Hall of the People.
